Contemplation

觀 · See clearly before you move

Acting before the whole picture is clear often brings regret—observing is also a kind of action.

Try this Only gather information today: ask, read, list options; no final call yet.

In daily life, this often points to seeing clearly before acting—observation and gathering information are already a form of action.

Core judgment

The fault is deciding before you have seen the whole picture; the remedy is surveying the regions, observing the people, and setting teaching—first gather information and show sincerity; observing itself is already action.

Pattern & remedy

Kun below and Xun above: compliance with yielding; the great view above looks on the world from upright center, hence Guan (Contemplation). The qi is wind moving over the earth: surveying first, teaching after. The Great Image says wind moving over the earth is Guan; the early kings surveyed the regions, observed the people, and set teaching. See the people’s condition clearly first, then set teaching. Favor the sincerity of washing hands without yet offering; restrain deciding before observing—with sincerity that commands respect, those below watch and are transformed. Demonstration and gathering are stronger than rushing to decide; not deciding yet is often this hexagram’s rightful move.

Historical mirror

Like Confucius arriving in Wei and first asking about its government and observing its customs—the qi near Guan: survey the regions first, set teaching after; do not lay a heavy hand before the whole picture is clear; sincerity first, then transformation.

What to do in the situation

Today only gather information: ask people, read documents, list options—do not decide yet. When you must see clearly before acting, observing and gathering information is itself a form of action. Set three columns—confirmed / still to confirm / options—and today fill only the first two. Lead others with visible sincerity and example; leave the decision until the whole picture is clear.

What the ancients said

盥而不薦,有孚顒若。

Guan is looking carefully: washed hands, offering not yet—trust already present. You are seen, and you also model by action—sincerity first, then influence.

大觀在上,順而巽,中正以觀天下。觀,盥而不薦,有孚顒若,下觀而化也。觀天之神道,而四時不忒,聖人以神道設教,而天下服矣。

風行地上,觀;先王以省方,觀民設教。

Wind across earth: survey regions, watch people, set teaching—see the mood clearly before designing guidance.

Brief background

"風地觀" has 坤 below and 巽 above. Guan is wind across earth: inspecting and modeling. Hands washed, offering not yet—heart already sincere; ancient rites prized trust; watchers are moved by sincerity first.
